History

The Darby Singers was formed in September 1998 by Bernard Crawforth, a former Deputy Head of the Abraham Darby School, Madeley, hence our name ‘The Darby Singers’.  The choir was supplemented by members of the disbanded Sutton Hill Ladies Choir in 2008 and at present we are a group of 43.

We have developed a very wide repertoire and have given numerous concerts over the years, raising lots of money for local charities.  We regularly perform at organisations within our community, especially residential homes, OAP lunch clubs, dementia groups etc.,  and also very much enjoy being part of local events such as the Much Wenlock Christmas Fair, Sunnycroft (NT) at Christmas, and various special weekends at Blists Hill.  In addition, we are very pleased to be part of what has become an annual event, which is a joint concert with the Hadley Orpheus Male Voice Choir.  Carol singing in Ironbridge just before Christmas to raise money for Severn Hospice, is always a perfect end to our choir year.

Sadly our founder and inspiration, Bernard Crawforth, died in September 2004. Following Bernard’s death, Robyn Davies took over as Musical Director in September 2005 and remained with us for 11 years, until December 2016, when our current Musical Director, Lorna Parkhouse took over the reigns.

We continue to be grateful to the Abraham Darby Academy for their generous support in allowing us to use their facilities for our weekly rehearsals.
